SOAR Program for Student-AthletesScholastic excellenceOutstanding character Athletic achievement, Responsibility to self and others Scholastic ExcellenceSCHOLASTIC EXCELLENCE is a priority of the administration, coaches and student-athletes at the University of Oregon. The supporting cast includes academic advisors, a highly qualified tutorial staff and a study table available at all hours to accommodate the various schedules of student- athletes. The athletic department takes pride in knowing its student-athletes have a higher graduation rate and grade point average than the general student population.Academic Support Services: Recently remodeled, the Academic Support Services facility at McArthur Court better accommodates the needs of our student-athletes. The building houses the tutorial staff, academic advisors, a resource library, two computer labs, a math lab and study tables. Student-athletes can use the latest in computer technology here and at the Casanova Center, available for use on both weekday and weekend hours compatible to student- athletes' schedules. Academic Advising: Academic advisors provide guidance in all aspects of educational planning. Advisors assist in course schedule planning, monitoring academic performance, graduation planning and making referrals to tutorial services when student-athletes need additional support to achieve academic success. At the end of the year, an awards dessert is held to honor those students who have achieved winning performances in the classrooms.
ATHLETIC EXCELLENCEATHLETIC EXCELLENCE is recognized through the work ethic and standards of our teams. It is not only measured by wins and losses, but also by our compliance to the rules, sportsmanship on the fields of play, conditioning and nutrition of our athletes and the medical care they receive.Handling life as an athlete in the Conference of Champions: As freshmen, all student-athletes benefit from training in media relations. Interview skills are fine-tuned through mock interviews, learning what is appropriate to say and examining the ins and outs of the print and electronic media. Student-athletes also gain valuable information on dealing with agents through a seminar, an agent panel and speakers from the NCAA. This is vital for student-athletes who plan to make their sport a profession following college. Student-athletes are given a handbook with policies and procedures to guide them during their athletic career at the University of Oregon. Our Teams Work As One: Each team is represented by two student-athletes at bi-monthly Team Council meetings. The representatives are elected by their teammates for a year and serve as policy makers, event planners and liaisons between their team and the athletics department administration.
Personal DevelopmentPERSONAL DEVELOPMENT is key for all of us to triumph in the end. The University of Oregon athletics department has a responsibility to its student-athletes to not only help them develop into winners on the courts and fields, but more importantly, in the game of life.Skills For the Present and the Future: All new student-athletes at the University of Oregon must complete a mandatory three-credit class, which provides an in-depth analysis of relevant issues encountered during their college career as an athlete and a student. Issues of Intercollegiate Athletics: The Freshman Experience covers such topics as time, anger and stress management; values, beliefs and goals clarification; issues of diversity; making healthy lifestyle decisions; enhancing academic and athletic performance and dealing with authority and the media. Upperclassmen also have the option of taking Beyond Intercollegiate Athletics, a 400- level, three-credit course which aids student-athletes in disengaging from their sport and assists those who are interested in pursuing coaching.
Career DevelopmentCAREER DEVELOPMENT is the ultimate goal of the SOAR program. Throughout the college experience, our student-athletes are guided step-by-step as they pursue their various interests. From the freshman year exploration of possible interests and goals, to the final years of their education in which they pursue internships and summer jobs, the student-athlete is looked out for and encouraged every step of the way.Pursuing life after college: The Keep Oregon Green program helps connect our student-athletes with businesses within the state of Oregon for summer jobs, internships and future employment. In their first year, all freshmen are introduced to the personnel in the Career Center and are given the Myers-Briggs Inventory to determine their personality traits and the Holland's Interest Inventory to give them additional information about their preferences. Many student-athletes also enroll in the College to Careers class for help with resumes and interview skills.
Commitment to ServiceCOMMITMENT TO SERVICE is a vital component of the total development of our student athletes. A win-win situation is created for the University of Oregon student-athletes and the youth in the community, as one learns from the other in various settings. Our student-athletes motivate, inspire, encourage and act as role models for Eugene/Springfield youth, while enhancing their own self- esteem and character.Athletes Living as Role Models: Student-athletes not only perform in uniform, they perform out of uniform as well. The A.L.A.R.M. Program integrates athletes with the youth in the Eugene/Springfield area. The 4th Grade mentor program is one of the ways student-athletes get involved. Paired student-athletes adopt a local 4th grade class for the year and make a minimum of two visits during the school year. Oregon athletes also are regular speakers at area schools, motivating and inspiring the youth of our community. Student- athletes also help the Police Activities League (PAL) supervise the PAL Program's open gym and activity night, held for at-risk 3rd through 5th grade children. Our student-athletes truly are role models.
