2000 PAC-10 Championships Quotes, 5/20/00
Men's Long Jump Champion, Dwight Phillips, Arizona State - 26'6.25"
"It felt really good. I wanted to get in some more jumps, but I settled for 26-6. But, it felt like a regular jump. It sets the tone for the team, and motivates me for the other events."
Men's Long Jump 2nd Place, Nat Johnson, Oregon - 25'3.50"
"More than surprised, I was relieved by my performance. The Pac-10's haven't always been a good event for me. I've been waiting for this meet for a long time. I did what I expected to do, and it was fun. I am stronger and faster than I have been in the past. Every jump was a good one, better than my previous PR of 24'. It was my last jump at Hayward, as a Duck, and it is a great way to finish."
Women's Long Jump Champion, Tiffany Greer, Arizona State - 21'0"
"My first jump was by far the best, it felt good. I was ready, I got really hyped, and I just told myself I was going to go out and win the Pac-10s on the first jump. And I have competition every time I jump, but that pushes me to jump farther."
Men's Shot Put Champion, Ben Lindsey, Washington - 63' 11.75"
"I've been throwing great in practice. This was my season best, and it will better my position going into the NCAA's. Competition pushes me. I have a long-time rivalry with Washington State's Ian Waltz. He brings out the best in me, I guess. Hayward Field, and the Pac-10 Championships is where the real competition starts. The Pac-10, top to bottom, is so strong. We have some tremendous athletes in this conference."
Women's Hammer Champion, Christina Tolson, UCLA - 208'5"
"When I learned the Pac-10's were going to be at Hayward Field, I was very excited. After competing here last year at the USA Trials, I knew it was going to be a beautiful day and I was going to do well. I was pleased with 208', but I wanted to throw 210' today, but I just couldn't get it out there. Winning the Pac-10 Championship means everything to me because I wasn't able to compete last year since I redshirted, so this was very special to me.
Women's Javelin Champion, Molly Monroe, Washington State - 152'7"
"It feels great. It's been a long season, a long four years. It was getting stressful out there, but I managed to pull it off. The runway was a little slippery, but I was able to get it done."
Women's Javelin, 3rd place, Charyl Weingarten, Oregon - 146'4"
"On my last throw, I wanted to end with a good one and I did. Of course I would have liked to throw better, but I'll take it. My goal was to set a season's best and I did. I wanted a NCAA provisional (152'7") but I'll take a personal best and third place at the Pac-10s. Next year our goal will be to finish 1-4 with everybody returning but Wendy (Olson), so I'm excited for next year.
Men's 3000 Meter Steeplechase Champion, Jeremy Rasmussen, Arizona State - 8:49.00
"I'm really relieved. I just stuck to my race plan and ran through. My plan was to hang back a bit, run 70s and stay off the lead. Coach left it up to me when I wanted to move up front. I just wanted to stay poised and keep my head in things. It helps us out as a team, I think our sprinters and jumpers will help us tremendously and our distance guys will turn some heads."
Men's Pole Vault Champion, Toby Stevenson, Stanford - 18'9.25"
"All year long I've been getting more and more confident. My base has been getting higher, and when you're base is higher, your peak is higher. It's one of those things, it takes the right day, the right conditions and the right people, and it was right today, it was a good day. I knew it was going to take over 18 to win, with the good conditions and good facilities here. With my 18-9 mark, it felt like everything was perfect, I just sailed over. I was having a good time. Us pole vaulters kind of have a fraternity, I cheer for them and they cheer for me. We feed off the energy from each other."
Men's Hammer Throw Champion, Norbert Horvath, USC - 230'6"
"This was my season best, so I'm very happy. But, I think I could do better. My average was almost the same for the series. I think we helped the team by getting the top four places. It's important because three of our guys are seniors, and this is the last meet for them. So we have had to get together and fight for each other. The Pac-10s are a team thing."
Women's Shot Put Champion, Seilala Sua, UCLA - 56'9.50"
"The javelin didn't go as well as I wanted. I had hoped to qualify for the NCAAs. Shot put went ok, I wanted to get a decent, comfortable throw. They were not my best throws, but this is my warm-up for the NCAAs. I'm looking for an NCAA title."
Women's 3000 Meters Champion, Sally Glynn, Stanford - 9:22.11
"I think the race went pretty slowly. Conferences race tend to be that way, kind of slow then fast then slow. My goal was kind of go with the flow and cover everyone's moves. The way the race went, I thought it was safe until the last 150 to pull ahead. This was nice because I've had some pretty weak end of seasons. I've run well into mid-May and then had some poor conference performances. But, it felt pretty good overall."
Men's Javelin Champion, Esko Mikkola, Arizona - 236'6"
"I was not all that satisfied with how far I threw, but I was happy I could take all six throws. I had some injuries, including a bad ankle sprain and I was out for six weeks. My first three throws, I was throwing kind of high, and I realized that with the wind, it wasn't good to go high. So, on my fourth throw, I went kind of low and that was my best throw."
Ricardo Cottengim, Oregon, 100 (Injured), non qualifier (10.83)
"I sprained my left ankle again -- I did it initially earlier in the week, but it felt OK as the week went on. Even today, in warm-ups it felt OK, but then I started to feel pain about 70 meters into the race -- from there it only got worse. After the race, it really hurt, but once I had a chance to calm down and get some ice on it, it wasn't so bad. I'll come back tomorrow and see how it feels. The trainers want to wait and check its strength before they can really judge it. They put me in a walking boot for now to take the pressure off. I can walk on it that way, so we'll have to see how it fares tomorrow. The most frustrating part is the 4x100, because I thought we had a chance to maybe win it."
Women's 10,000 Meters Champion, Kate Bradshaw, Washington - 34:41.03
"I was trying to focus on keeping a good pace, and I didn't want to save anything for the end. I didn't think I had a chance to win until about the last lap. Winning the Pac-10s never even crossed my mind. I just came in confident that I could improve my time. [On passing senior teammate Anna Aoki] She's a senior, and I'm a freshman and I've always just followed her, but Coach said to help her out, so I went by her and I was going to either die or keep going."
Men's 10,000 Meters Champion, Brad Hauser, Stanford - 29:27.90
"The 10,000 is always big for Stanford, so we needed to make a good showing. We stayed together for most of the first half and tried to open it up a bit in the second half. It's always nice to do well at the Pac-10s, it is an important meet. It's my fifth year, and I'd love to go out on a good note, and give it a shot at the NCAAs"
